ABSTRACT
Background The Treaty of Rome 1957 laid down the foundations for the European Community (EC). The EC is based on the ideal of creating a united Europe with countries working together rather than in conflict. Every country that is part of the EC is referred to as a Member State. The United Kingdom joined the EC by passing the European Communities Act 1972.
