ABSTRACT

Many people who this chapter applies to will be in receipt of state benefits. Many benefits are means-tested and are not available to people with what the state regards as too much money. Here is the situation at the time of writing for income support/jobseeker’s allowance:

Adults living at home, where the claimant, and their partner if there is one, are both under 60 years oldthe first £3,000 of their savings is ignored. Every additional £250 of savings is assumed to bring in an income of £1 a week (‘tariff income’), and this is deducted from their benefits (we wish we knew where we could get such a huge return on our savings!). If they have savings of over £8,000, they will get no income support at all.
