All the same, people of modest wealth are in fact in a minority. The Inland Revenue certainly want you to think so. Their leaflet Inheritance Tax-An Introduction (see www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk) says cheerfully, ‘Here’s the good news. More than 96% of estates do not have to pay any inheritance tax, because they are below the threshold’.
