Admit the full amount of your claim and offer to pay. You can now apply for a ‘judgment on admission’; this may be an attractive option if you find the defendant’s payment proposals unacceptable.
Lie low and say nothing. If the defendant does not respond to the claim form before the deadline you can apply for a ‘default judgment’ (a sort of legal walkover, where the other side, far from biting you, rolls over and has its tummy tickled) for the whole amount.
