ABSTRACT

1Introduction toMixed UseBuildings 1-01 Mixed use, in the sense of a single building used for both residential and commercial purposes, is by no means a new concept. Indeed, since medieval times, craftsmen and workers have lived above their workshop, and any house built in the centre of a town before the 17th century would originally have comprised a shop or workshop below and living space above. Only in the 20th century did the space above the high street come to be left unoccupied, often due to insurance reasons.
