ABSTRACT

Simple sentences with one tone-group A very large number of sentences (208 out of 646), consist of a single clause/

group/word which has a single tone-group. As we have seen in Part 1, in many cases (68) these are exclamations of some sort (e.g. Ee 'yes', Basi 'That was that', Haya 'O.K.'). These serve as a kind of punctuation throughout the narrative, often signalling the end of the one section of the story and moving on to the next. In some cases this might be thought of as a sort of paragraph marker. Another use of such expressions is to insert the reaction of the narrator, e.g.: Do! 'Goodness!', He! 'Amazing', Oh! 'Shocking!' (the first two ending with a glottal stop, the last starting with one). A third use is to express the feelings of a protagonist. In many cases, of course, more than one function is combined.
