ABSTRACT

Testing is only one way to tackle the issue of drugs and sport; sadly, it is the highest profile response to the problem of drug misuse in sport and is a very necessary part of the programme to protect athletes and their reputations. The very fact that more money is spent on testing than on information or education in virtually every country in the world demonstrates how important testing is considered within sport. Testing is a recent phenomenon; it was first introduced in the 1960s and has been improved and refined to reflect doping practices, although problems remain.
