When Major League Baseball home run hero Mark McGuire admitted that he used the drug androstenedione, the US media was on alert. Reports ran of rampant drug use by players in sports in the US, particularly that of professional athletes. The media claimed that players would do anything to avoid being caught, while owners and administrators would take any measures to restrict a player’s personal freedom. But this was not the real issue.
