ABSTRACT
The Law of the Sea Convention (1982) contains a considerable number of articles designed to promote the peaceful settlement of disputes; the relevant provisions are contained in Part XV (Arts 279-299). Article 279 commits all state parties to the principle of the peaceful settlement of disputes while Art 280 permits such parties to reach agreement as to a particular method of peaceful resolution. It will be open to parties in dispute to seek conciliation.284
