ABSTRACT
In 1980, Elizabeth Kane became the first known commercial surrogate in the USA, saying she became a surrogate because of her ‘Christian life’ and ‘sisterhood’ and that she felt that becoming a surrogate gave childless people new hope. Several American surrogates appear to have undertaken surrogacy for money, a desire to be pregnant and through an urge to reconcile a birthrelated trauma in the past.
