ABSTRACT

The IPPC Directive was adopted on 30 October 1996 and Member States have three years in which to implement its provisions. There was an obvious overlap with the UK system of IPC outlined above but the Directive does contain certain unique features. The scope of the Directive is somewhat broader in that pollution20 subject to integrated prevention and control includes noise which under the EPA is the subject of a separate system contained in Pt III (statutory nuisance). The aim is to provide protection for the environment as a whole by imposing measures to prevent or reduce emissions in the air, water and land (Art 1). The UK system of IPC required amendment in order to comply with this Directive. The legal basis for this amendment has been the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999.
