ABSTRACT

The applicant’s suitability is often the most important consideration. The applicant(s) will be interviewed by the police and should attend when the magistrates visit the premises. There are certain persons who are disqualified from holding licences altogether and most benches will be concerned about any recent convictions (apart from road traffic offences, unless involving drink-driving!). Applicants are usually expected to be able to speak sufficient English to demonstrate an understanding of the licensing laws (not necessarily easy, even if English is a first language!) and to show that they could deal with any difficult customers. It is unusual for very young applicants to be successful and experience or training is often a prerequisite. They must also show a relationship to the premises or the company managing the premises.
