ABSTRACT

In this account so far, reference has been made, as appropriate, to certain regulations. In this chapter, it is only possible to treat in any detail the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) and the so called ‘Six Pack’ as updated – that it is to say the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, made to implement most of the provisions of the EC’s Framework Directive – and the five sets of Regulations which, like the Management Regulations, were first brought into force in the UK on 1 January 1993 to implement the first five of the Directives which the EC has made subordinate to the Framework Directive. All seven sets of Regulations have in common that they apply to most workplaces and they impose upon employers the duty to assess and respond to risks. They also stress the need to train and inform workers.
