ABSTRACT
Imprisoned women are no longer invisible women. A great deal is known about their class and ethnic origins,3 and the gender-specific pains they suffer as women in a system originally organised for, and still predominantly run by, men.4 Now, at the millennium, there is much official talk about the current policies in England to reduce the pains of women in prison5 and, in Scotland, to reduce the numbers of women incarcerated.6
