ABSTRACT
To traditional Muslims they were nothing but infidels and atheists, “the victims of an overexposure to the decadent values of a degenerate Europe” 1 In reality they were highly resentful of European interference in the empires domestic affairs. Most were socialists and freemasons, but some would embrace a variety of Islamic values and try to reconcile them with science, materialism, and nationalism.
