ABSTRACT

The quantity of alcohol in the body can be scientifically measured at any given time. Consequently, the law has laid down certain levels of permissible alcohol in the body in certain circumstances, namely when driving or contemplating driving a motor vehicle. These limits mean that where the presence of alcohol in the body exceeds those limits, an offence is being committed. As a result, the limits have been expressed in measurements which are readily comprehensible and can be tested easily. The level of alcohol in the body is, therefore, usually measured in three ways: the level in the breath, in the blood, and in the urine. Sampling methods differ according to the procedure adopted.
