ABSTRACT

Clinical education in the core mental health professions is based on various theoretical models and associated diagnostic and treatment methods that generally are assumed to apply to all human beings. But as professionals are well aware by now, many of the accepted truisms of clinical training and practice are based on unsupported theory or on studies conducted on highly restricted populations, and much research has been limited to White, middle-class males. Deficits in test standardization have raised questions regarding the accuracy of diagnoses across cultures.
