ABSTRACT
Where a divorce petition is based on five years’ separation (not any other type of petition), the respondent may oppose the granting of a decree on the ground that the dissolution of the marriage will result in grave financial or other hardship to him/her and that it would be wrong in all circumstances to dissolve the marriage (Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, section 5(1)).
