ABSTRACT

Having explored various issues in the theory and practice of learning groups, the aim of this chapter is to introduce applications of groupwork which are distinctive in some way. What they have in common is that they are approaches to learning and change which are at the ‘cutting edge’ of group practice, either because they are relatively new (as in online groups) or under constant rethinking and development. The four applications I have chosen are:

the learning community, because it is a way of basing not just a session or an event, but an entire programme on a participative approach;

online groups, groups on courses working together through the medium of computer conferencing;

single-sex groups, either in the context of T groups or for learning about gender-related issues; and

team development, as perhaps one of the best known applications of group work in organizations.
