ABSTRACT

In writing this chapter we have assumed that there will be at least some readers who have little idea of what a pleading is and no idea at all of how to go about drafting one. The chapter is therefore intended to be a basic introduction to drafting pleadings in tort cases. It will explain what pleadings are and the rules and conventions which must be understood if pleadings are to be effectively drafted. At the same time the chapter provides a basic framework within which the skill of drafting in relation to particular areas of tort can be examined in later chapters. Finally, the chapter has been organised so as to facilitate reference to it for guidance on particular points of pleading that may arise.
