ABSTRACT
The courts will not enforce contracts whose purpose is illegal. It is a principle of public policy that no court will lend support to a party who founds his cause of action on an immoral or illegal act (Holman v Johnson (1775)). Hence, it should be no surprise that this rule applies not only to agreements that are criminal in intent but also those that are regarded as injurious to society in the wide sense.
