ABSTRACT

Teaching and learning in a design subject is quite different from more analytical aspects of courses, but the development of self assessment skills is no less important. This chapter reports on the development and evaluation of a strategy in which students are provided with criteria to use in a self—assessment exercise. Although the work described here was completed some years ago, the chapter presents a good example of the use of self marking in the initial stages of a subject before students are able to articulate criteria of their own. A particular feature is the inclusion of staff assessment of the quality of the students' self assessment exercise.
