ABSTRACT

Research degree students are facing increasing pressures to complete their theses in ever shorter times; additionally, new forms of doctorate are being introduced which will require the development of new skills for supervisors. Results of the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) have encouraged universities to increase their output in terms of successful DPhils. With these developments in mind, the research degrees sub-committee at the University of Ulster approached Staff Development with a request for the department to provide some form of staff development for research student supervisors.
