ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the current and future importance of applied research, as opposed to basic or strategic research. This subject has become of increasing importance in recent years due to several reasons. In particular, recent commercial and financial pressures have meant that those undertaking any research of any form must, more and more, justify the relevance and worth of their work to the funding bodies or companies who are financing that work. This has, by necessity, resulted in a much more applied and practical orientation to many research projects.
