ABSTRACT

F. 1939 as a right-wing Catholic party. Having repositioned itself as a Christian Democratic party, after the introduction of a degree of proportional representation in the 1960s the PAN began to gain enough votes nationally to win seats in the Chamber of Deputies. It was not until the 1980s, however, that it won control of a state for the first time and emerged as the only effective opposition to the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institutional.
