ABSTRACT
In a region where unemployment is a key problem, tourism is a major source of jobs on many of the islands. The most extreme case is the Bahamas where more than one-third of the official labour force are directly employed in the tourist industry. Direct employment of locals is for the most part low paid, unskilled and seasonal. Many more work in the informal sector in activities connected with tourism such as providing transport or selling souvenirs.
