ABSTRACT
Trade union international; f. 1951 under US auspices to combat the influence of international communism; regional branch of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). Though it withdrew from ICFTU in 1969, the AFofL-CIO remained the most powerful member of ORIT; the organization has been accused of supporting coups against left-wing governments in the region.
