ABSTRACT
F. 1982 as an umbrella organization to co-ordinate the efforts of four armed guerrilla movements: the Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias, the Organización del Pueblo en Armas and the Partido Guatemalteco del Trabajo. Its political wing was called the Representación Unitarida de la Oposición Guatemalteca. In December 1996, with UN mediation, the URNG signed a definitive peace agreement with the government, bringing armed action to an end. Demobilization of the guerrillas began in March 1997 and was completed within two months.
