ABSTRACT

Under the Education Reform Act of 1988 primary school teachers are now required to integrate the use of information technology (IT) into the teaching of all nine school subjects, and have to teach IT itself to all of their pupils as part of the National Curriculum for Technology. Students on one-year Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) courses for primary schools in England and Wales therefore need to learn how to use a range of computer hardware and software, and to be able to use them in their day-to-day work with children. They therefore need both to learn IT for themselves, and to have acquired sufficient confidence and competence to be able to manage and teach IT to their children in schools.
