ABSTRACT

John Merrill Olin began his career working for his father’s company, which later became the Olin Corporation, one of the largest US producers of copper alloys, ammunition and chlorine. John Olin served as the corporation’s Chairman of the Board until 1957. He made a name as a conservationist who led efforts to save the Atlantic salmon and as a philanthropist who founded the John M.Olin Foundation in 1953. Through the foundation, Olin wished to preserve, strengthen and further cultivate principles and institutions of political and economic liberty. In accordance with Olin’s wishes, the foundation has begun a process to cease operations over the next few years.
