ABSTRACT
Background In the 1980s, a number of surveys were conducted which suggested that graduates in the UK were underequipped for employment. Surveys of employer satisfaction with the abilities of their graduate employees indicated skills shortages in the following areas: giving oral presentations, written communication, numeracy and IT abilities (Roizen and Jepson, 1985; Brennan and McGeever, 1987).
