ABSTRACT
Definitions of what is meant by the term ‘community’ are contentious to say the least (McGivney 1999b). The usage might include a range of potential meanings including geographical, occupational, political or cultural dimensions. The term has frequently been used ideologically and ambiguously (Thompson 1980b) and remains a ‘notoriously slippery and contested concept’ (Martin 1987).
