ABSTRACT

In this chapter I attempt to flesh out the role of social class in my life and how it intersects with other social concepts. This has not been easy as class remains a slippery category to define and analyze even in one national context. As an African-American who has lived and worked in the UK for 14 years I have found that attempting cross-national analyses increased the difficulty. And trying to tease out class from other concepts and categories such as race and gender is not straightforward either. Nonetheless intellectually and politically, Marxist definitions of class appeal to me even though I remain unconvinced of the primacy of social class over and above other kinds of social stratification.
