ABSTRACT

When I was asked to write of my experiences of growing up in the privileged classes I accepted reluctantly, for fear of exposing an identity that I have spent many years trying to hide and deconstruct. But, it is time someone spilled the caviar so to speak. My class/life education consisted of learning to tell the difference between those who were educated to “pass” and those who were socalled “born and bred”. The irony is that there are many more similarities than differences between those “born and bred” and those who have “learnt”. For example, the many markers of class are actively taught over an entire lifetime. In order to provide some background information I begin this chapter with a brief overview of my family and schooling. I describe how I was actively taught class and my ongoing resistance.
