ABSTRACT

Following the April 1975 Communist capture of Sài Gòn a military administration took charge in the South. In April 1976 general elections took place for a single National Assembly. It met in June and the next month proclaimed the reunified country the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) with its capital at Hà Nôi; Sài Gòn became Hô Chí Minh City. In September 1977 the SRV was admitted to the United Nations.
