ABSTRACT

Contacts between Vietnam and the West date from the second century. An archaeological site along the Mekong River has yielded Roman coins, some of them from the reign of Antonius Pius (138-61), and Chinese records note the arrival in 166 by sea in Giao Chi of merchants claiming to be emissaries of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on their way to the Han court.1
