ABSTRACT

A decade has now passed since we began our work under the ESRC’s Countryside Change Programme. The overall aim of the research has been to review the main economic, political and social trends taking place in the countryside and to consider the way these are reflected in processes of land development. Through a series of general theoretical statements and the application of these to a number of case studies we have sought to uncover the main dynamics of change in the countryside. The present volume represents the culmination of this research and provides an overview of the various themes pursued under the Programme.
