The huge and international success of My Sweetheart was, however, still in the future in 1881–82. At that stage, Willie and Waddy were running around the country playing Our Goblins, and Willie was establishing himself as a useful “hack” in the playwriting business: a man who could turn out a well-cut and well-fitting vehicle for a star of extravaganza or of comedy-drama.
