ABSTRACT

The 28 core families who participated in the study reported on in this book tell 28 different stories about the effects of learning to live in a different culture, yet raise many common themes. This chapter summarises: it briefly presents the people who participated in the study, the stresses they reported, and the short-term effects of the move. The two main concepts used to analyse such effects are then discussed: these are sense of coherence and the way a family operates together in relation to the external world. The chapter ends with some questions concerning the long-term effects of the move, then with brief sections on moving and families, and on stress and families.
