ABSTRACT

The most effective ways to utilize learning contracts in higher education is to base them upon the field of practice in which the learner is involved. Another common approach is to draft a learning contract prior to undertaking a period of field experience or work placement during a full-time course. Learning contracts can also be used beneficially for personal and career development or as part of a formal staff development scheme, often in conjunction with a course at a university or further education college. Sandwich courses are based upon the principle that integrating periods of work experience into a degree course provides students with relevant industrial, business or professional experience to ensure both practical competence and an understanding of their chosen field. Personal rapport is an important consideration when selecting a mentor in plan of a realistic learning strategy. Training providers who make use of a post-course project often negotiate the activity by means of a learning contract.
