ABSTRACT
Some, as we have seen, believed it made sense to ask whether some common feature could be found in aesthetic responses that would give the essence of the aesthetic. That brings us to the claim, which has dominated much of the discussion of aesthetics in the second half of this century, that this whole approach is flawed. That brings us, in turn, to Ludwig Wittgenstein, a figure who looms over the philosophy of this period.
