ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 described how most countries sense a crisis in the schools and the growing awareness among parents and citizens that today's school-leavers are ill equipped with the skills, knowledge and values to meet the challenges of a modern global information society. The remedies discussed there were organizational and infrastructural. This chapter discusses issues of teacher education and how it can contribute to help both pre-service and in-service teachers understand and respond to the urgent need for lifelong learning in schools and in the community.
