ABSTRACT

Implementing flexible assessment strategies that embrace the concepts of APL offers significant challenges for those responsible for staff development. As we have seen throughout this book, there are a number of issues that need to be addressed before staff are competent to deliver the range of learning and assessment services required. They may need to develop in technical areas such as assessment and non-directive advising; equally they may need to improve in non-technical areas such as communication and their ability to work with others. In this chapter we will describe principles of best practice in flexible assessment staff development, provide guidance on basic topics and suggest outcomes for a range of training sessions. In the UK, of course, staff development in many contexts should reflect the TDLB standards, particularly since S/NVQ, assessors must be accredited.
