ABSTRACT

If evaluation is often forgotten in multimedia production then maintenance is more or less ignored. The amount of time needed to maintain a multimedia title can often be severely underestimated. As was noted in section 3.1.5, there is an inversely proportional relationship between the time taken on design and the time spent on maintenance.

The Dosage Calculation program was mostly developed before we had adopted the current design methodology. Some aspects of the design were not comprehensive enough to define clearly how the program would behave, particularly in respect of the testing modules, which should have been designed at the same time as the rest of the program, instead of being added at a later date. In addition, too little attention was paid to the laboratory environment in which the program would run. Consequently, more than 50% of the total development time was spent on unfunded maintenance and debugging of the program.

The Carbohydrates program, on the other hand, went through a comprehensive design process. In this case, debugging and maintenance comprised five hours out of approximately 300 hours total development time.
