ABSTRACT

This chapter explains training and development in some sectors is linked much more closely to project management, with clear purposes, clear methodologies and clear training and development activities in support of achieving those objectives over an already agreed timescale. Evaluating the real benefits of training and development requires a broad understanding of what it can comprise, as well as a shared definition. In higher education staff development and training could benefit from seeing its function as essentially project oriented. The projects would stem from the strategic plan, which would have different priorities year on year. The final point, securing the support of stakeholders, is of paramount importance if project outcomes are to have any real value. Many universities and colleges have introduced some form of appraisal following a project, examining and testing appropriate models. Appraisal is, of course, an ideal vehicle for supporting effective evaluation.
