ABSTRACT
Full details are given in this appendix of the data type VARYING_STRING, a standard modular extension to the Fortran language. The rationale and structure of the type are explained, and the operators and intrinsic procedures that can operate on it. After some examples of its use, there is a brief critique of the ISO VARYING STRINGS module.
