ABSTRACT

The intended audience is an important factor in determining the form and structure of any research report. In a piece of applied research, such as an evaluation commissioned by clients whose main interest is in the recommendations, a final report might emphasize the conclusions and recommendations and place comparatively less emphasis on theoretical and methodological details. Writing needs to start at an early point in the research process. Any research document, whether it is a thesis, a report or some other type of communication, be written and rewritten several times before submission. Researchers may wish to have their work published or at least disseminated to a wider audience than that normally available to a thesis. For many researchers the construction of the final report is one of the most rewarding parts of the process. Often it is only at this point that the full implications of what has been done and achieved become apparent.
