ABSTRACT

To wit: An airline company was once faced with the problem of trying to induce a crew of recent immigrants to vacuum the cabins of its airplanes. The maintenance crew refused, believing vacuuming to be “women’s work.” So the airline equipped the recalcitrant crew with huge, battleship-gray, industrialstrength vacuum tanks, at which point the crew members obligingly did the work. The fact that the tanks were now more cumbersome made the work all the more agreeable.
