ABSTRACT

The short definition of intercultural hermeneutics is that it is the proper study, and thereby understanding, of any message passed between cultures and what happens in the course of that transmission. The “proper study” includes comprehensive and philosophical study of the essence, process, problems, limits, and criteria of what counts as successful intercultural communication; desiderata of intercultural communication; products of intercultural communication; the final stage of understanding itself; the understanding of that understanding and the understanding of the understanding of understanding; the practice of that understanding; and the occurrence of that understanding whether or not self-concious. This is the short definition.
