ABSTRACT

The political economy of old age in Britain is particularly associated with the work of Alan Walker and that of Chris Phillipson (Phillipson 1982, Phillipson & Walker 1986). There has been a considerable development of such approaches under the heading of “critical gerontology” both in Britain and the USA (Cole 1993, Minkler & Estes 1991). This has been the most fruitful method of considering the relationship between old age and inequality but it has a number of distinct problems.
